The lens makes a notable difference in the sharpness and contrast of the picture. I have an old 4MP Sony with a Zeiss lens and its pictures still rival 10MP P/S cameras at print sizes less than or equal to 8x10. You also want to look for shutter lag. My old Sony turns on in less than 2 seconds and has almost no shutter lag so I don't miss shots that require quick reaction.
