I am an African American Female. late 30′s, married with 3 children, living in the 2nd largest City in my state;(+189,000). I have 2 degrees; BBA Marketing and a Masters of Management/Organizational Development. I married right out of college, never had a mentor and did not spend time grooming for a career. I’ve only had two jobs and it was in Administration, doing Diversity work for an area college for 1 year, and in a local high school for 9 years. I decided to stay at home w/ 3rd child after my position was eliminated. I started a consulting business, but only obtain one contract. That was in 2003, I have been persistently looking for work and either I do not have enough experience or I find out the company hired within. I am discouraged. I want to transistion into a career where I can learn a skill, become an expert and hopefully retire in that field; as a professor, consultant, trainer and/or career Development Coach (Ha) I can’t even find a job for myself. Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, and by the way, I have experienced Pyramid businesses or At home business gimmicks and definitely not interested in doing this.
After reading your posting, I got to the end where you mention being a consultant, trainer or career development coach…and it really hit me.
Those are the exact things that you should be doing!
Right now people are struggling. Jobs are scarce, as you know. For those who can, they hang on and hope things will get better…for others, they do what they can to take courses to give themselves a leg up and a way out of unemployment or jobs that are lacking.
You really need to take your education – which is the biggest asset you have to work with, and use it. Apply at any of the colleges or adult training centers near you. Those two degrees are more than many teachers have these days – and with so many people looking to boost their employability, you could be in the perfect position to walk into a teaching job.
Get out there! Make it happen!
Don’t lose hope. You obviously have skills and an education. See if you can network with someone in your chosen field. You will be amazed at how many "leads" you can get. Even if those people don’t have any openings available, I bet they know who does.

You may want to do as I am and go back to college to get an A.S. in the health field, they are always in need. Some more than others. I already have a BA in business but I had such a had time finding a job and even had to lie on my resume and remove my BA so I could work in customer service when I was unemployeed to long and got stuck in phone work fields and am burned out from it.
I am applying for an A.S in Respiratory Therapy. I would do the B.S but they dont offer it in my area.
If I was you, I would go to your local college and see what they may recommend considering that you have a Masters already. But the only way out of your situation is to get trainined in a new field.
